A dozen or so people, diverse in age, ethnicity, and political leanings, have agreed to be part of a year-long experiment in civil discourse.  Each month, we bring you a conversation with some members of the group.  Our aim:  to observe whether the tone and quality of the conversation changes as they get to know one another over the course of the year.

Hari Kondabolu is on at least a double mission – although they are connected.

[Hari's voice from a Tumblr post:]  "Hari Kondabolu.  Hari... Kondabolu."

He calls this The Galifianakis.  On this edition, we find out why.  But he says his big goal is making people laugh...

And because it is a grand experiment, today will be a little different.  Instead of talking with them in small groups of three – we’re in a round table setting of sorts with all six.

New Hanover County

Project Grace.  Some hear that term and imagine an exciting evolution of Wilmington’s downtown area – bringing together cultural attractions – such as the Cape Fear Museum, shopping, the library, affordable housing in a market that desperately needs it.  Done properly, it could turn downtown into a more of a destination for locals and tourists.

The film production landscape in North Carolina in first quarter of 2019 consists of Swamp Thing, Uncle Frank, and the pilot, Reprisal -- the latter two in pre-production.

“Sins, like chickens, come home to roost.  The South paid a fearful price for the wrong of negro slavery; in some form or other it will doubtless reap the fruits of this later iniquity…”

Hurricane Florence hit the Cape Fear region September 14, 2018.   She made landfall with significantly lower wind speeds than originally predicted -- as a Category 1 – but she had expanded in size and slowed down, which meant torrential rainfall over the Carolinas along with hurricane and tropical storm force winds.

Keeping trees in your yard could actually protect your home rather than threaten it during tropical storms and hurricanes.  That goes against much of the conventional wisdom in the region about trees on one’s property during hurricane season.  On this edition of CoastLine, we find out why.

The New Hanover County Board of Education will meet next week to discuss the future of Williston Middle School. At issue is whether it will become an arts school, a high school, or perhaps stay as it is. That’s just one of several items the new Board is working on this year. And those items come with some history.

New Hanover County’s NAACP celebrates its 100th anniversay this year.  Founded nationally in 1909, the local chapter of the National Association For The Advancement of Colored People launched ten years later.

Wilmington’s music scene is “on fire.”  That’s according to one of our guests on this edition of CoastLine.

It was February 28th, 2013, nearly six years ago, that WHQR broadcast the pilot episode of CoastLine.  It was an hour on what was then the hottest topic in town:  the debate about opening a cement plant in Castle Hayne.

The new legislative session convenes next week, and the Cape Fear region has priorities.  This is the time municipalities solidify and communicate that agenda to their local delegation.

Bullying is a public health problem.  According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the working definition of bullying is “unwanted, aggressive behavior among school-aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time. Bullying includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or verbally, and excluding someone from a group on purpose.”  It can occur in-person or through technology.

City of Wilmington

Walking around the Cape Fear region can be tricky – even downright dangerous in some areas.  For example, the Gary Shell Cross City Trail in Wilmington runs from Wrightsville Beach to the University of North Carolina Wilmington before making a half-loop, passing the Cameron Art Museum, and in the process linking at least four city parks.
