CAPE FEAR MEMORIAL BRIDGE CLOSURE: UPDATES, RESOURCES, AND CONTEXT

WoW On The Street - 32 Weeks And Counting

This week marks the 32nd Monday in a row that a small group of protestors took their message to a street corner in Wilmington. They object to the Trump administration’s decision to roll back an Obama-era health insurance mandate, which requires employers to provide birth control coverage to employees without co-payments.

“Ho, Ho, Hey Hey, Family planning has got to stay, Ho, Ho, Hey Hey, Family planning has got to stay …”

It’s midday on a Monday at the corner of 3rd and Princess in downtown Wilmington… and that means WOW is making a point. Today there are nine of them.

“Absolutely, this is our 32nd consecutive Monday out here on the street corner. We’re protesting issues that affect women and our families.”

Lynn Shoemaker is one of the original founders of Women Organizing for Wilmington, or WOW.

“We feel like Trump is taking a backdoor into dismantling ACA, since he couldn’t do it through the House and Senate. Now we’re going to do it piece by piece sort of like what they have done to public education.”

Drivers honk their horns in support.

Today they are protesting Trump’s move against Obamacare's birth control coverage mandate. Next week, it will be another issue. On average, a dozen gather each week.
