Wilmington voters will decide whether to approve a 55 million dollar transportation bond this November. WHQR’s Isabelle Shepherd reports that the City of Wilmington is educating voters on the bond, which would fund improvements to increase traffic flow, safety, walkability, and bikability.
The City needs more than 200 million dollars to improve transportation. That’s according to Mike Kozlosky, Executive Director of the Wilmington Metropolitan Planning Organization. A two-cent property tax increase would fund roughly a quarter of the city’s need. But what changes will people see if the transportation bond is passed?
"They’ll see intersection improvements and additional capacity at those intersections. They’ll also see safety improvements with improved crosswalks, as well as the implementation of sidewalks, bicycle lanes, and multiuse trails throughout the city."
Kozlosky says that the tax increase would amount to an extra $40 per year for homeowners of a two-hundred thousand dollar property.
Voter registration ends on October 10th.
