Two Covid Clusters Arrive At UNCW

The University of North Carolina-Wilmington has identified two clusters of COVID-19 in campus dorms.

It wasn't entirely unexpected.

At around seven Thursday night, UNCW students received an alert on their phones.

Two clusters of the novel coronavirus were identified at campus dorms: “in Pelican Hall and Graham-Hewlett Hall.” [automated voice]

A ‘cluster’ is defined as five or more cases in close proximity that occur within a 14-day period. Students involved are isolating and receiving medical monitoring or treatment, and contact tracing has begun. The university has an online data dashboard, which updates daily regarding confirmed cases.

UNC in Chapel Hill identified four clusters in the first week of school before pivoting to entirely virtual learning. By that time, more than 130 cases had been identified on campus. Clusters also developed at NC State and East Carolina University, eventually causing those campuses to move entirely online as well. Now, all eyes are on UNCW.
