In Oak Island Mike Defeo is on the Planning Board. He’s also running for a seat on Town Council. As we continue our series of profiles on those running for office in the region, WHQR has more on what Defeo is trying to accomplish.
Mike Defeo says finding and retaining employees for the town’s small businesses is a concern on Oak Island. One of his top agenda items is creating affordable housing for those workers.
“I think that we need to address that. Maybe not on the Island itself, but there's plenty of a room on the mainland to partner with realtors and developers in the town to solve that, and try to build some affordable housing in single homes, duplexes, triplexes, apartments, in all the different mix that make it affordable, so that we can attract people. Hopefully, attract the people who can work in the small businesses on the Island.”
Defeo also wants to focus on what he calls the lack of citizen participation in running Oak Island. And he says growth needs to be better managed. Vince Winkel, WHQR News.
