CAPE FEAR MEMORIAL BRIDGE: Updates, resources, and context

State Senator David Rouzer takes the stage at Republican National Convention

At the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida, North Carolina Senator David Rouzer took the stage to talk about what he calls the stark contrast in candidate choices in both the Presidential race -- and the contest for the 7th Congressional District of North Carolina.

WHQR’s Rachel Lewis Hilburn spoke with the Senator by phone from Florida just after his speech.

“Please give a warm welcome to David Rouzer, who’s running to represent North Carolina in its 7th congressional district.”

Americans are at a crossroads:  that was the heart of Rouzer’s two-minute message to the country yesterday afternoon.

"This election will determine whether we continue on the path of more spending, more debt, and economic disaster or whether we choose real solutions and return to the basic principles of free enterprise and limited government.”

The Johnston County Republican took aim at President Barack Obama:

“Now at this critical hour in our nation’s history, we can’t afford to re-elect Barack Obama – a man who believes that America is the problem.”

Rouzer also went after Democratic Congressman Mike McIntyre, North Carolina’s 7th district representative for 8 consecutive terms.

"We can’t afford to re-elect Mike McIntyre, a man who voted four times to make Nancy Pelosi the Speaker – and then voted with her more than 90 % of the time – again, more than 90% of the time – while she controlled the House.”

Senator Rouzer highlights what he calls a huge philosophical rift between the parties.  But in a conversation following his speech, he says he prides himself on his record of working cooperatively -- at both the state level and during his tenure with Senators Jesse Helms and Elizabeth Dole.

Rachel hosts and produces CoastLine, an award-winning hourlong conversation featuring artists, humanitarians, scholars, and innovators in North Carolina. The show airs Wednesdays at noon and Sundays at 4 pm on 91.3 FM WHQR Public Media. It's also available as a podcast; just search CoastLine WHQR. You can reach her at rachellh@whqr.org.
