Shelter Information In Advance Of Hurricane Dorian

Shelters for those seeking a safer place in preparation for Hurricane Dorian begin opening Wednesday, September 4th.  Please note time differences in each county.

New Hanover County Shelters:

Emergency shelters open at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, September 4th.   

Blair Elementary on Blair School Road (also known as Wrightsville Beach at Blair Elementary) (Pet Co-location Shelter)

Codington Elementary School

Those seeking emergency shelter should bring their own blankets/pillows, prescription medications and other necessary items like extra clothing and hygiene supplies. No alcohol, illegal drugs, or weapons are permitted. There will be limited food service available for people seeking shelter.  

Wrightsville Beach at Blair Elementary School (located on Blair School Road) is a pet co-location shelter, and is available to house cats and dogs. Animals will be maintained in a separate wing of the facility, and owners are allowed visitation at designated times. Residents who are leaving town or staying in a location that does not welcome pets, have the option of taking their pet to the New Hanover County Animal Services Unit at 180 Division Drive.

Owners are responsible for providing a crate for their pet and any medication and food for special dietary needs.

Brunswick County

Brunswick County will open two shelters Wednesday, Sept. 4 at 8 a.m.  Both shelters are pet friendly.

North Brunswick High School: 114 Scorpion Drive, Leland, NC

West Brunswick High School: 550 Whiteville Road, Shallotte, NC

Brunswick County opened a third pet friendly shelter on Wednesday.

South Brunswick High School: 280 Cougar Road, Boiling Spring Lakes, NC

Also, Brunswick County Emergency Services has a computerized registry of people with special medical needs who may require special assistance in the event of a disaster.

You are encouraged to contact your municipality or visit their website to verify if there is a state of emergency and/or a voluntary or mandatory evacuation for your area. A list of municipalities and their websites is at https://www.brunswickcountync.gov/info/municipalities/

Meals will be available at or around 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Shelters open at 2 PM on Wednesday, September 4th.  

Topsail Elementary

Malpass Corner Elementary

Cape Fear Middle School (pet-friendly)

The state has opened a shelter at Northgate Mall in Durham (1620 Guess Rd). If you feel you need to seek assistance outside of the county, this shelter will be open for anyone.
