Join us at WHQR for a performance by incredible harp duo Lilac 94 on Friday, May 31st at Noon. It's free—and you can bring your lunch if you like! "A Little Lunch Music" is a live gallery performance that takes place at WHQR's MC Erny Gallery in Downtown Wilmington.
As the Wilmington Star News writes, “Christina Brier and Kathryn Sloat of Lilac 94 aren’t your grandmother’s harpists. Brier and Sloat hit their soundboards, pound their harps with mallets, slap their strings, and generally make a ruckus.” The contemporary harp duo is dedicated to performing new and previously undiscovered music and exploring creative ways of using the harp. Since 2013, Lilac 94 has given concerts and premiered new works in venues ranging from retirement homes and schools to churches and the traditional concert hall to museums and street cafes.
In addition to its dedication to contemporary music, Lilac 94 revels adventuring into the realm of cutting edge harp sounds to embrace everything from Gershwin to Bollywood beats and everything in between.
With roots in North Carolina and New York, Lilac 94 has also had the pleasure of sharing their musical collaboration with the greater communities of Wilmington (NC), Rochester (NY) and New York’s Greater Capital Region. Christina Brier and Kathryn Sloat began playing together in their first semester as masters students at the Eastman School of Music, and formed Lilac 94 just before their graduation in May 2013. They chose their name to reflect their origins in Rochester, New York where the lilac is the flower of the city and the 94 strings of their two harps.
Lilac 94 will also be performing Sunday, June 2nd at 5:00 PM at the Wilson Center as part of The Wilmington Symphony Orchestra's Masterworks Series. Program includes Karl Jenkins’ Over the Stone, and Rachmaninov’s Symphony No. 2. For more information, visit www.wilmingtonsymphony.org.
