CAPE FEAR MEMORIAL BRIDGE CLOSURE: UPDATES, RESOURCES, AND CONTEXT

Friday Feedback for December 26, 2014

What a gem we have had all these years. -- JoAnn and Irving Fogler

Listener Robert made a contribution and wrote:

I listen less and less to WHQR, particularly since the transition to the new format. What little listening is to the news station. Pity.

This listener heard a bilingual Christmas music program on Classical HQR last Friday.

[AUDIO CLIP]
Hi, this is Laurie Rochon from Oak Island. I’m listening to WHQR Classical on live streaming, and I love this program that’s on right now. . . It’s Spanish and English – the commentator. So I think that’s real helpful in our community. Thank you so much for providing that. All right – rock on, WHQR. Bye. Oh, Merry Christmas, too.

That program was a holiday special produced by WDAV in Davidson.

Listener Peggy Cervantes made a pledge and wrote:

More NPR please! Less classical music and less rerun talk programs from years ago. More current news please.

Listener Bob wrote:

Since moving here from Albany, NY, where we had both an NPR station… and a 24/7 classical station station…, I have been THRILLED to find your two stations. You have truly helped my (often bumpy) transition to Wilmington.

Listener Christa wrote last Friday:

Hey WHQR, wanted to say again, great job on the new programming but this mis-cue issue is driving us nuts in the office! We were just listening to Here and Now and heard two announcements within three minutes of each other and both were talking over the programming (and at least one said the wrong time). What’s going on to cause this to constantly happen?

The short answer is that President Obama scheduled a press conference on short notice. Normally at 1:59 pm on Friday our on-air computer switches from Here and Now to Science Friday. We became aware of NPR’s change a short time before 2:00 and it proved impossible to re-program the computers in time to prevent the duplication you heard.

Bob and Eveyln of Oak Island wrote:

On Saturday afternoon, that raw and wet day, our USPS carrier delivered a package, and Eureka it was an HD Radio from you guys. I hooked it up and the sound quality was quite remarkable for a small sized unit. Thank you, thank you, thank you. We were able to listen to the last act of the Marriage of Figaro at the Met… [We] found out about Jemila's resignation in the Star-News and the HQR email newsletter. We sent her an email expressing our gratitude for all the years of hearing and enjoying her perky and informative voice - even on those fundraisers. She'll be missed.”

Today is the last day on the air for Jemila Ericson. We asked listener for comments about Jemila and her 20 years at the helm of classical music. JoAnn and Irving Fogler wrote:

What a gem we have had all these years. We have been with HQR since the start and contributed every year. Throughout these years, she has brighten[ed] our days, inform[ed] us with the most wonderful interviews and charm[ed] us with her contagious laugh. It will be difficult imagining HQR without her. But we wish God 's speed and much joy in where ever she goes. We really appreciate both stations and always hope for the best for WHQR.

They closed with a quotation from C.S. Lewis:

You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.
