North Carolina House District 17 makes up much of Brunswick County. Current Republican Representative Frank Iler is facing challenger Patricia Sykes in the May Primary.  Here is more on the incumbent’s competition.

Southport’s Patricia Sykes has been a Brunswick County Commissioner for the last six years.

The retired business owner brings more than 30 years of experience with federal and local agencies to the table.

It’s that experience that prompted her to make this run for state office.

“Working with the local government, and seeing how the state relates to the counties, the unfunded mandates, and the changes that take place in Raleigh affects the county – and there were some things I disagreed with, that was going on so I felt I needed to step up to fight for those issues to support the county.”

Sykes’ term as county commissioner expires in 2020.

District 17 incumbent Frank Iler has been in office since 2009.

Early voting is underway for the May 8th election.
