About Diverse Works:

When MJ Cunningham, a long time resident of Acme Art in Wilmington, decided to invite several of her exceptionally gifted women artist friends to join her for a show in the gallery at Acme Art, a group known as Diverse Works was born.

Not only was that first show in October 2014 a huge success, but all of the gals, most of whom did not know each other before, bonded quickly and a fun social group was formed.  Some of the original gals have moved away, a couple others have been added, but there is still a core group of originals. They continue to have shows and meet socially.  Their personalities and work, while “diverse,” also are complementary as a whole and present an interesting and appealing exhibit.

Current members: MJ Cunningham, Christine Farley, Anne Sinclair, Kate Sinclair, Peggy Vineyard, and Katherine Webb. All live in Wilmington, NC except Kate who is a student at the Academy of Art in New York City.

About the Artists:

MJ Cunningham – MJ Cunningham is a mixed media artist in every sense of the word and loves the challenges of working in “something” different. Presently it is joint compound!  She feels that every piece of art is a bridge to somewhere and always her goal is to extend an invitation to the viewer to cross over that bridge into her world. She has been a resident artist at Acme Art in Wilmington for the past 13 years.

Christine Farley – Christine Farley is a mixed media artist; her work reflects current events, music and thought provoking abstract expressions through color and form. She is currently a member of the North Carolina Watercolor Society and Acme Studios. She is the past president of the Wilmington Art Association Juried Shows. Christine is also the 2016 winner in the Sculpture Category of Silver Arts competition for the North Carolina Senior Games.

Christine has a Bachelor of Science of Business Management and has a career in Pharmaceutical Advisement and Marketing. She is currently working on her masters of fine arts at Academy of Art University.

Anne Sinclair – Anne Sinclair inspired by her surroundings to paint the impressions of what she sees in the quiet places of her life. The simple and overlooked objects and spaces are always there for observation and reflection.  Anne’s paintings tell stories of relationships and time through unity and space, as simple as the connection of two weathered seashells in a bowl or fresh fruit collected on a table.

Anne transplanted 20 years ago from New York to Wilmington to raise her family. Her four children are grown with eight grandchildren, and just recently she has been able to devote more time to painting. Anne graduated from Skidmore College with a BS in Art and a Masters of Fine Arts from UNCW. Her passion is sharing her love of art with young students, and for 17 years she has been teaching visual arts at Hoggard High School with great enthusiasm.

Kate Sinclair – Kate is a local Wilmingtonian. At 26 she left Wilmington to work on a 150' motor yacht as a stewardess. With not much time or space to paint on the boat, Kate saved drawings and photographs to use as inspirations for the works featured in Diverse Works. Kate’s paintings are inspired by the water and the plant life she saw from as far south as St. Barthes in the Caribbean and up north in Nantucket, Main.

In reflection two years later, Kate has realized working on the boat allowed her to save money and narrow in on the direction of her life, which is to be a professional painter. In the fall of this year, Kate will attend New York Academy of Art, a figurative and representational graduate school in New York City. Beginning in July Kate will move to New York and begin a new chapter of her budding art career.

Peggy Vineyard – An awards winning artist in Houston, Texas and Wilmington, NC, Peggy began her love for art in elementary school.  She graduated from the University of Houston in Elementary Education with an Art minor and Masters in Guidance and Counseling.

Following a career in teaching, counseling and real estate, she became a full time artist when she and her husband moved to Wilmington 5 years ago.  Her primary medium is watercolor and acrylics.  Her work is mostly non-representational and abstract which reflects her love of nature with experimentation of shapes, colors, organic forms, line and design blending together to create a painting.

Katherine Wolf Webb – Katherine Wolf Webb is a native North Carolinian and has been creating art for over a half a century (way over!).  She is now affiliated with Acme Art.
