John Golden and Rob Nathanson have been playing and writing music together for over 30 years. These two talented gentlemen are marking their long history of friendship and musicianship with a concert called Autumn Song at 30, playing at UNCW's Beckwith Recital Hall on Thursday, 8/18 at 7:30. Joining them onstage: Tom Harder (mandolin, fiddle), Mark Teachey (guitar, resonator), Lloyd Wilson (percussionist, storyteller), and Catesby Jones (bass). Listen above to our interview with Golden and Nathanson.
These folks have played together in various configurations many times over the years, but this concert has a unique poignancy: In the fall of 1986, Nathanson and Golden played their music at Thalian Hall, with one of their most popular pieces being a song called Autumn Song. Here, the singer reflects back on 30 years of being a musician. Golden and Nathanson are 30 years on from the writing of this song...what a great time to sing it again.
Nathanson & Golden share a sample of Virginia Dare in the studio at the beginning of the interview above, and a sample of Autumn Song at the end from their 1984 album. As a special treat, the full Autumn Song from the album Cape Fear Songs is below-it's a fine piece of music, but it won't compare to the live performance on Thursday. Tickets are available at the door for $6, a benefit for UNCW Music Scholarships.
