Cinematique Presents: “The Wife”

The Wife runs from Monday, October 22 thru Friday, October 26. It screens Monday to Friday at 7pm with an additional screening on Wednesday at 4pm in Thalian Hall’s Stein Theatre.

Joan (played by six-time Oscar nominee Glenn Close) and Joe (played by two-time Tony Award winner Jonathan Price) remain balanced complements after nearly 40 years of marriage. Where Joe is casual, Joan is elegant. Where Joe is vain, Joan is self-effacing. And where Joe enjoys his very public role as the great American novelist, Joan pours her considerable intellect, grace, charm and diplomacy into the private role of a great man's wife. As Joe is about to be awarded the Nobel Prize for his acclaimed and prolific body of work, Joan contemplates the shared compromises, secrets and betrayals.

From the critics:

Close plays this ignored, pushed-aside woman like a gathering storm, drawing us into the mind and heart of a heroine who's not going to take it any more. Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

Like a cat-and-mouse game of egos, expectations and psychological flip-flops, “The Wife” unspools in a series of chance encounters, flashbacks and moments of dawning consciousness that are choreographed with understatement and precision. Ann Hornaday, Washington Post
