Cinematique Presents: "The Souvenir"

Jun 25, 2019

The Souvenir runs from Monday, July 1st thru Friday (except Thursday, July 4th - no screening), July 5th. It screens Monday to Friday at 7pm with an additional screening on Wednesday at 4pm in Thalian Hall’s Stein Theatre. NOTE - No screening on Thursday, July 4.

The Souvenir follows a shy but ambitious film student (Honor Swinton Byrne) who begins to find her voice as an artist while navigating a turbulent courtship with a charismatic but untrustworthy man (Tom Burke). She defies her protective mother (Tilda Swinton) and concerned friends as she slips deeper and deeper into an intense, emotionally fraught relationship that comes dangerously close to destroying her dreams.

The Souvenir feels like a whispered confidence, an intimate disclosure that shouldn’t be betrayed because it isn’t really yours. A.O. ScottThe NYTimes

It’s a leap back in time but with new, meta implications, hints at how her sense of formlessness was formed. The movie is never not fascinating.David EdelsteinVulture
