Cinematique Presents: “The Old Man and The Gun”

Nov 9, 2018

The Old Man and The Gun runs from Monday, November 26 thru Wednesday, November 28. It screens Monday to Wednesday at 7pm with an additional screening on Wednesday at 4pm in Thalian Hall’s Main Theatre.

Forrest Tucker (Robert Redford) has been on the wrong side of the law since he was a teen. He grew into a career bank robber who broke out of prison 18 times, including a daring escape from San Quentin at age 70. The film, based on a true story, covers his twilight years, and an unprecedented string of daring heists that confound authorities and enchants the public. Wrapped up in this chase are a detective (Casey Affleck) who becomes captivated with Forrest’s commitment to his craft, and a woman (Sissy Spacek) who loves him in spite of his chosen profession.

And whether it's really his final bow or not, Redford gives a virtuoso performance that feels like a valedictory. You want to salute him.

David Lowery’s “The Old Man & the Gun” is as deceptive as its protagonist. It tells the story of a man so likable and gentlemanly that tellers and bank managers practically handed him their money as he went about one of the most infamous robbery sprees in American history.
