Ian McKellen stars as an aged, retired Sherlock Holmes looking back on his life, and grappling with an unsolved case in this new twist on the world's most famous detective. In 1947, he returns from a journey to Japan, where, in search of a rare plant with powerful restorative qualities, he witnessed the devastation of nuclear warfare. Now, in his remote seaside farmhouse, Holmes faces the end of his days tending to bees, with only the company of his housekeeper and her young son, Roger. (Rated PG, 1 hour 45 minutes)
"Mr. Holmes adds another version of the beloved character to the Sherlock canon; less a mystery solved than a character explored, fascinating in many small ways thanks to superb work from McKellen."- Lisa Barnard, Toronto Star
"McKellen is brilliant throughout, his piercing blue eyes revealing the gallantry of youth and the sadness of a life's worth of memories slipping further away."- Miriam Di Nunzio, Chicago Sun-Times
