Cinematique Presents: "Hunt For The Wilderpeople"

A hilarious, touching crowd-pleaser, “Hunt For The Wilderpeople” from TaikaWaititi reminds us about the journey that growing up is (at any age) and those who help us along the way.

Raised on hip-hop and foster care, defiant city kid Ricky (Julian Dennison) gets a fresh start in the New Zealand countryside. He finds himself at home with his new foster family: the loving Aunt Bella, the cantankerous Uncle Hec (Sam Neill), and dog Tupac. When a tragedy strikes that threatens to ship Ricky to another home, both he and Hec go on the run in the bush. As a national manhunt ensues, the newly branded outlaws must face their options: go out in a blaze of glory or overcome their differences and survive as a family. (PG-13, Runtime: 101 minutes).

“Hunt for the Wilderpeople” takes a troika of familiar story types — the plucky kid, the crusty geezer, the nurturing bosom — and strips them of cliché. Charming and funny, it is a drama masquerading as a comedy about an unloved boy whom nobody wants until someone says, Yes, I’ll love him." -Manohla Dargis, New York Times

"The coming-of-age tale, the on-the-run road movie, the buddy comedy, the boy's adventure story — all genres that require a steady hand and a singular sensibility, and all of which you'll find in Taika Waititi's goofy, giddy mash-up about two fugitives fleeing authorities in the New Zealand bush." -David Fear, Rolling Stone
