CAPE FEAR MEMORIAL BRIDGE: Updates, resources, and context

37 Miles of Roadway Getting a Facelift in Brunswick, NHCo.

More than 37 miles of primary and secondary roads in Brunswick and New Hanover Counties will soon be resurfaced.

WHQR’s Michelle Bliss reports that the state Department of Transportation had awarded a $9.2 million contract for the work.

The contract was awarded to Barnhill Contracting Company in Tarboro whose work could begin as early as next month. Completion is slated for November.

Some of the longer stretches of road receiving facelifts include more than 15 miles of U.S. 17 between Bolivia and Shallotte and 5 miles of Holly Shelter Road from Castle Hayne to the Pender County line.

The contract is one of 39 awarded by DOT Secretary Gene Conti for highway and bridge projects across the state, totaling more than 200 million dollars.

The roads being resurfaced in Brunswick County include:

15.5 miles of U.S. 17 from U.S. 17 Business on the south end of Bolivia to U.S. 17 Business near Shallotte; 4.5 miles of Royal Oak Road from U.S. 17 to Big Macedonia Road near Shallotte; 3.6 miles of Boones Neck Road from N.C. 130 to the end of the road near Holden Beach; 2 miles of Randolphville Road from U.S.17 Business to Galloway Road in Bolivia; 2 miles of U.S. 17 Business from U.S. 17 to N.C. 179 in Shallotte; 1.6 miles of Kirby Road from Seashore Road to N.C. 130 near Holden Beach; and 0.7 miles of N.C. 211 from U.S. 17 to Lockwood Folly River Bridge in Supply.

The roads being resurfaced in New Hanover County include:

5.1 miles of Holly Shelter Road from U.S. 117 (Castle Hayne Road) to the Pender County line in Castle Hayne; 4.9 miles of Sidbury Road from Dairy Farm Road to the Pender County line in Castle Hayne; 1.7 miles of Masonboro Loop Road from Grissom Road to the Whiskey Creek Bridge in Wilmington; 0.9 miles of Piner Road from east of U.S. 421 to Masonboro Loop Road in Wilmington; 0.8 miles of U.S. 74/76 from east of Summer Rest Road to U.S. 76 in Wrightsville Beach; 0.7 miles of Sidbury Road from Blue Clay Road to Dairy Farm Road in Castle Hayne; 0.67 miles of U.S. 74 from U.S. 76 to west of Banks Channel Bridge in Wrightsville Beach; 0.5 miles of Shannon Road from Myrtle Grove Road to the end of the road in Wilmington; and 0.3 miles of Grissom Road from Peden Point Road to Masonboro Loop Road in Wilmington.
