John P. Scherer II
During his childhood in small town West Virginia, public radio first entered John’s consciousness as Morning Edition echoed from his parent’s radio before breakfast (esp. Bob Edwards) and All Things Considered filled their car or house in the afternoon before dinner. NPR exposed John to the arts, politics, culture, international news, and human interest stories far removed from Appalachia. Thanks to his parents’ efforts, the public library, teachers, the small bookstore in town, and public radio, John developed a keen interest in the world outside of West Virginia. He still has these interests and a love of public radio.
Since moving to Wilmington almost 9 years ago, John has served as Associate General Counsel and then General Counsel at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. During this time, he has also served as the Responsible First Amendment Officer and an instructor of first-year students on the First Amendment. A former Major in the United States Army Judge Advocate General's Corps, he served in various active duty and reserve positions for several years. For eleven (11) years, he served as an Assistant Attorney General in the North Carolina Department of Justice. As an AG, he defended the North Carolina Department of Correction in employment and prisoner litigation, as well as complex employment and constitutional litigation, including First Amendment claims, for the University of North Carolina and its constituent institutions. John graduated Magna Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa, from Davidson College with a B.A. (History with Honors), and law school from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (J.D.). Most important, he is a husband to Jen, and the father to two sly children, Jack and Regan.
