The New Hanover County’s Partnership Advisory Group announced at their January 23 meeting that 18 organizations have expressed interest in exploring a possible merger or purchase of New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Of those, six have signed Non-Disclosure Agreements with the county, allowing them to access all the medical center data.  Much of the meeting was spent discussing hospital governance.

PAG members were briefed about and discussed the medical center’s current governance, and governance best practices from across the country. Spence Broadhurst is Co-Chair of the PAG.

“I think this is a start of a real educational process that will work, as Barb says, will work moving forward, as it relates to things that just quite frankly can't be handled in a soundbite. You know, we're all interested in local control. You see that, y'all reported on it, it's been published. But what does that really mean? You know, and so this governance really gives us a background you know, there are different kinds of local control, right? So this talks about how we're governed, you know, the assets are owned by the County and then it's leased to the medical center and, you know, we'll get a full understanding of how that works and what the limitations are in that model.”

PAG members also expressed concern about what they believe is misinformation being pushed in local commercials and social media. Co-Chair Barb Biehner says people are running with assumptions based on bits of information without understanding the bigger picture.

Meanwhile, the deadline for organizations to respond to the RFP is March 16. That’s when PAG members will begin to go through all the proposals. By March 31, all those proposals should be online for the public to access. Vince Winkel, WHQR News.
