The potential sale of New Hanover Regional Medical Center appears to have a new roadblock. It’s a nonprofit corporation launched today called, “Save Our Hospital.” The organization is not in favor of selling the healthcare system.
“In our communication efforts, we will engage in a continuing public education campaign….”(fade)
On the steps of the old New Hanover County Courthouse, Gene Merritt is explaining what Save Our Hospital will do. He’s the President of the newly formed organization.
“Fundamentally, we are against the sale of the hospital or a partnership. However, upon the receipt of appropriate and valid reasons to do so, we might look at it a little bit differently, but we feel that information has not been provided to us or the public whatsoever. Our main goal is to do what's in the best interest of the people of Southeastern North Carolina. That's all.”
He alleges that while he supports the efforts of the Partnership Advisory Group, in reality the PAG is just part of a public relations campaign to sell the hospital. Merritt did not rule out legal action against the county.
