EPA Hosting All-Day PFAS Meeting Tuesday

Tuesday in Fayetteville, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will hold an all-day series of meetings. This is in response to North Carolina residents having been exposed to chemicals like GenX in the Cape Fear River, and toxic firefighting foam on military bases around the State.

The EPA meeting starts at 10 a.m, at the Crown Ballroom on Coliseum Drive, in Fayetteville.

The North Carolina Community Engagement event will include presentations from federal, state, and local organizations followed by a public listening session starting at 3:00 p.m.

Local speakers in the afternoon include Emily Donovan of Clean Cape Fear, Dana Sargent with Cape Fear River Watch, and Kemp Burdette, also of Cape Fear River Watch, who serves as the Cape Fear Riverkeeper.

The EPA has conducted similar meetings with communities impacted by these chemicals in New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, and Colorado.

There’s growing evidence that these compounds can cause health problems, including various cancers. However there has been very little testing on humans so far. But testing on lab animals does show a variety of health implications from exposure.

Representatives from Chemours are not currently listed on the agenda of speakers.
