Most flights in and out of ILM on Monday have been cancelled.

Tropical Storm Irma may have changed course, but high winds are still blowing through the Cape Fear region. That’s causing flight and ferry cancellations through the evening.

The high winds buffeting Wilmington and other cities in the southeast have prompted both Delta and American Airlines to cancel almost all their flights this afternoon and this evening. Travelers are encouraged to check the airport website, flyilm.com, or airline websites for updates.

Meanwhile out on the water, both the Southport - Fort Fisher and Bald Head Island ferries have suspended operations due to those same high winds until further notice.

According to Reid Hawkins of the National Weather Service, we can expect those windy conditions to continue through the evening.

“As Irma moves through northern Florida it’s slowly dissipating but we’re still expecting strong winds because it’s such a large wind field. Later this afternoon and this evening we’re expecting winds in the Wilmington – Cape Fear area at 25 to 30 miles an hour with gusts up to 45 miles an hour. As we go through the overnight they should slowly subside.

“Also a couple of these outer bands that were from Irma will be moving through tonight, with a possibility of an isolated tornado. Usually they are really quick to come done, on the ground for two or three minutes and then pop back up. People need to be aware of that.”

Ferry services, and flights in and out of ILM, are expected to resume on Tuesday.
