US Airways Takes Flight from ILM to DC

By Michelle Bliss

03-03-11 – Wilmingtonians can start flying directly to D.C. this weekend as US Airways takes its inaugural flight from Wilmington International Airport, or ILM, to Reagan National Airport on Saturday.

Non-stop flights to DC will run on the weekends, with one flight per day to start.

Gary Broughton is director of operations at ILM. He says he hopes the service will quickly expand.

"Hopefully, we can move that into weekday service. We have a great deal of business travel out of Wilmington and I'm sure they'd like to see the weekday travel as well."

Broughton says that ILM is looking at Chicago as another nonstop destination since the Windy City has been one of the airport's top five destinations for several years.

In 2010, ILM set its highest passenger record with nearly 822,000 people flying in and out of the airport.
