03-01-11 – The nonprofit group Arts North Carolina is hosting workshops across the state to discuss advocacy strategies for the arts during a time of immense budget cuts.
The group is hosting its next workshop in Wilmington tomorrow after meeting in Lumberton last week.
Arts North Carolina President Richard Sceiford says that the goal of the meeting is to teach participants how to start a dialogue with their local and state government officials.
"If you can give them the talking points, the legislators, about the value of the arts, as this battle keeps getting hotter and hotter, they have they're talking points. That's really what it's about."
Sceiford says that increased advocacy efforts are crucial now that some states, including South Carolina and Kansas, are discussing total defunding of their state arts commissions.
The Arts North Carolina Advocacy Workshop is Wednesday evening at 5:30 at the Cameron Art Museum in Wilmington.
