Brunswick Co. Offers Vaccines for Immunization Month
By Michelle Bliss
08-03-10 – August is National Immunization Awareness Month and the Brunswick County Health Department is celebrating with immunization events across the county.
Public health nurses in Brunswick County will be setting up shop at middle school open houses this month to administer an array of vaccines. Sixth graders are required by state law to receive a T-dap shot for tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis within the first 30 days of school and many colleges require the T-dap upon enrollment. Jeanna Condron is nursing supervisor for the Brunswick County Health Department. She says the events should serve as a wake-up call.
"It's a time for people to say, Well hey, maybe my child isn't up-to-date. What do I need to do? Let me call the health department and see what we need to do.'"
Nurses will also be available at several senior citizen events to administer vaccines for pneumonia, meningitis, shingles, and the flu.
