McIntyre Steps Back on Offshore Drilling
By Roderick McClain
Wilmington, NC – Back in 2008 North Carolina Congressman Mike McIntyre voted to lift the ban on offshore drilling, but since then the Deepwater Horizon explosion has resulted in an oil slick that stretches across hundreds of miles in the Gulf of Mexico.
While McIntyre says the state is ready if an oil-related accident happens in North Carolina, drilling off the coast should be put on hold until more is understood about the spill in the Gulf.
"Right now there's a less than one percent chance that the oil spill will affect our area of North Carolina. We're also blessed that the Gulf Stream tends to veer away as it approaches North Carolina."
McIntyre says there will be no drilling off the coast of North Carolina until it's certain an accident of similar proportions does not happen here.
