NC Says Booze It And Lose It This Holiday Weekend
By Maggie Martin
Wilmington, NC – North Carolina law enforcement is stepping up efforts to crack down on drinking and driving this July 4th weekend.
The Booze It and Lose It Campaign includes checkpoints and stepped-up patrols placed throughout the state through July 4th. Many checkpoints include a BAT mobile, or a breath alcohol testing unit.
Beth Horner is with the North Carolina Governor's Highway Safety Program. She says New Hanover County is one of a few counties in the state with a high DWI rate.
"Your typical counties that do get a lot of DWI's are New Hanover County, Wake County, Mecklenburg County, Guilford County, Gaston County got quite a few last year. So it just depends on the area. Obviously your more populated areas are going to get that higher number," says Horner.
Officers charged more than 1,300 North Carolina drivers with DWI during last year's campaign.
