McIntyre Comes Out Against Megaport in Southport

By Roderick McClain

Wilmington, NC – Congressman Mike McIntyre says he will not support the proposed port in Southport.

In a released statement McIntyre says the two billion dollar plan for the "port is too risky and too costly and could cause irreparable harm both economically and environmentally." His announcement came after the current version of the state budget failed to include funding to study the port.

McIntyre says many towns surrounding the proposed port let him know that they did not support the plan. And he says he has security concerns about building an international port so close to the Progress Energy's Brunswick County nuclear plant and the military base in Sunny Point.

The State Port announced plans back in 2005 for the megaport. All along the State Ports Authority has said, if built, the proposed port would significantly boost the state's economy.
