Leaders Explore Keeping Nightlife in Check

By Catherine M. Welch

Wilmington, NC – State leaders and mayors from cities across North Carolina will converge onto Wilmington Friday to discuss how cities can plan, manage and police their entertainment districts. They will be tackling many of the challenges facing downtown Wilmington, where bar patrons have at times turned into rowdy crowds.

Executive Director of Wilmington Downtown, Inc, John Hinnant, says while a vibrant night life is key to economic development, sometimes it can go too far. So the day long meeting at city hall will focus on how cities can keep entertainment districts in check.

Hinnant says they'll be making rules that hopefully bars will implement: such as keeping anyone under the drinking age out of bars.

"It really lowers your violence. Because what they founds is that the clubs with a heightened number of violent crimes or incidences of violence occur in establishments that allow under 21 in their place."

North Carolina Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission head Jon Williams will be at the nightlife forum. Hinnant says he hopes lawmakers and state agencies will respond to the rules and help cities implement them.
