Legislative Priority Includes Boosting Violations

By Maggie Martin

Wilmington, NC – North Carolina's Joint Legislative Committee on Seafood and Aquaculture met at Fort Fisher Tuesday morning and unanimously voted to send seven legislative proposals to the Legislature.

Among the proposed bills is legislation that would hold recreational fisherman to the same standards as commercial fisherman when it comes to license suspensions and revocations.

As of now, the Division of Marine Fisheries can't suspend recreational fishing licenses. So the bill would allow suspension for violations such as failing to properly mark a buoy or having out-of-date registration stickers. It would also strengthen violations for catching an oversized or undersized fish.

The Division of Marine Fisheries hopes lawmakers will take up the bill next session.
