NH Co Tackles ABC, Trash and Skyway Project
By Catherine M. Welch
Wilmington, NC – New Hanover County Commissioners have tapped three men to fill the county's new Alcoholic Beverage Control board.
John Lyon, David Mathews and Thomas Wolfe will start their term on the board July 1st.
They take the reigns from the county manager, attorney and finance director, who served as the interim board after the last board resigned en masse amid controversy over the salaries of top ABC officials.
New Hanover County Manager Bruce Shell says the new board members will have a lot on their plate.
"We've adopted some eight new policies, we have a new CEO in place, we've also started the process of what we're going to do with some of the more controversial properties that were purchased. So whoever comes in has plenty to do."
County finance director Avril Pender will stay on the county's ABC board as an ex-officio member.
Outsourcing The Landfill and WASTEC
New Hanover County Commissioners are moving ahead with recommendations to accept a bid that calls for closing the county's waste-to-energy facility.
For more than a year, commissioners have been looking at outsourcing its WASTEC facility and landfill. On Monday a consultant suggested giving the bid to Republic Services, which would also cap gas at the landfill and give the county proceeds of future carbon credits.
The consultant also recommended looking at a bid from another company that proposed a food waste recycling program.
New Hanover County Commissioners will hold a work session and public meeting before voting on whether to accept the bid.
Filling the Skyway "Gap"
New Hanover County Commissioners also approved a resolution supporting seeking the so called "gap funding" for the Cape Fear Skyway project.
The proposed toll road and bridge come with a $1.1 billion price tag. The state would have to come up with nearly $50 million a year for 40 years to fill the gap between how much the bridge costs and how much it would collect in tolls.
Brunswick County commissioners took up a similar resolution at their meeting this week.
