Wilmington Looking At Downtown Bar Scene
By Catherine M. Welch
Wilmington, NC – The City of Wilmington will look at a resolution cracking down on the number of ABC permits needed by bars to sell alcohol.
In an email released Thursday, City Manager Sterling Cheatham says public safety is driving the review of how ABC permits are issued.
Cheatham says there are currently 73 active permits in downtown Wilmington, the city's largest concentration of bars. And records show calls to Wilmington police increase in the hours leading up to and following bar closings.
A citizen survey found more than half of respondents feel unsafe downtown at night. The Wilmington City Council will look at the ABC permit resolution at its meeting Tuesday night.
