Creative Wilmington Calls It Quits
By Laurin Penland
Wilmington, NC – Creative Wilmington, one of the few public arts programs in the city, announced that it will dissolve as an organization. The group says it could neither find a replacement nor the money for a director.
Former founding director Matthew Dols says he founded Creative Wilmington in 2005 after the arts council called it quits and no one stepped up to replace it. He says he's not surprised Creative Wilmington eventually closed up shop as well.
"I think the Wilmington area has always been a difficult place for the arts. It has never had any substantial, sustaining support for the arts."
Creative Wilmington is responsible for sculptures placed across downtown, Art for the Masses, and an events calendar website. The organization says it will no longer manage the website, but will keep operating the pedestrian art program until December 1st.
