Wilmington, NC – Nearly 32 million Americans are turning to food stamps to feed themselves and their families. And New Hanover County's Department of Social Services says it's also seeing a growing demand.

The number of people across the nation using food stamps has jumped 17%t over last year. And the lines are growing at the New Hanover County Department of Social Services, where a thousand people a month are applying for help. Assistant Director Sam Lane says offices have been packed for the last three months.

"We open at 8 o'clock in the morning and we may have already 15 or 20 people waiting. And some days our lobby and our food stamp department are just full all days long."

Lane says food stamp demand usually spikes in November and December, but the steady climb started back in July, and he doesn't expect it to slow down anytime soon.
