Council May Take First Step in Annexation

By Marina Giovannelli

Wilmington, NC –

The Wilmington City Council may take the first step in annexing a chunk of land in Monkey Junction by mid 2010.

The city is eyeing a square mile of land just north of the intersections of College and Carolina Beach Roads. The move would pull-in roughly 3,000 new city residents. Council will review an annexation plan during its meeting Tuesday night.

City spokesperson Malissa Talbert says the area has essentially become an extension of the Wilmington. An annexed resident will get fire, police and other services in exchange for their tax dollars.

"We don't look at this in terms of is this going to make us money. We look at this in terms of is this going to provide future growth, it's very important that we have quality growth in the area. But we do need to make sure we can provide the services we want and need to provide," says Talbert.

The annexation plan outlines a $2 million gain for Wilmington after five years. Talbert adds that the plan aims to achieve an equitable distribution of services.

"We want those who are using those services but not paying for those to be paying their fair share so that city tax payers don't have to keep paying more and more and more," says Talbert.

In other business, the council will appoint its newest member.
