Wilmington, NC –
One man is dead and another critically injured after an accident this afternoon at the construction site for a new bridge to Oak Island.
A beam made out of cement, known as a span, fell from its place on the bridge, crushing one construction worker to death. Another man suffered critical injuries and a third was able to leave the scene with minor injuries. Oak Island mayor Johnie Vereen says he thinks a temporary adhesive is to blame.
"We can only assume that for some reason the temporary material that they use to bind the two spans together until they can permanently make a bond turned loose. But that's speculation at best."
Vereen says the scene was crowded with emergency vehicles, law enforcement, and concerned passers-by who may have seen the accident occur.
