Applicants Sweet Talk City Council

By Marina Giovannelli

Wilmington, NC – 35 residents addressed The Wilmington City Council during its Tuesday night meeting, making their cast for why they should be the next city council member.

Applicants condensed their interests, experience and visions for the city into a three-minute monologue. Council members listened quietly, asking the applicants just a few short questions.

The candidate's presentations touched on themes of sustainable growth for the city, attracting businesses and addressing traffic problems. Many said their experience makes them well suited to ease the city through tough economic times.

Eight woman and 29 men, all of them white, have applied for a seat on council. Existing members of council vote to elect their newest member at a December 9th meeting.

A few applicants thanked the council for it's new procedure for appointing city council members, and Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo said that's what America is all about.
