18th House District: Film Incentives

By Michelle Bliss

Wilmington, NC – Democrat Sandra Spaulding Hughes was tapped back in March to fill Thomas Wright's seat and republican George Swart is her challenger.

When asked about making state film incentives permanent, Swart says he disagrees with all business incentives and has another idea instead.

"If the state would lower its corporate income tax rates so that we become competitive with the neighboring states and the southeastern United States, business would come without incentives."

Incumbent Sandra Spaulding Hughes says she supports extending film incentives in North Carolina.

"I served on the Film Commission and I see the need for it to have an incentive. It would bring business to our local employers, to the state, and it would give our employees a good-paying job."

Hughes served on the Wilmington Film Commission from 1999 to 2003. Swart has been married for 23 years and has two children.

The 18th House district includes parts of New Hanover and Pender counties.
