Wilmington, NC – The Wilmington City Council tonight will vote on whether the Gateway project can be built on land North of the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge.
Developers want to build an 11 story residential and commercial building, and they are asking the council to rezone the land from industrial to mixed use.
The city council and the planning commission have revised the proposal for the Gateway project several times to address concerns with building's height and increased traffic in the area.
Council member Laura Padgett says she would prefer a smaller building, but thinks the current proposal is better than some alternatives.
"That leaves it open to things that could really be bad impact on the southern residential historic district, like a trucking distribution center, something we have no control over, or no say," says Padgett.
The City Council will also discuss appointing an advisory board to the Hanna Block Historic USO building and Community Arts Center.
