Navassa to Accept Bids for Community Center
By Peter Biello
Wilmington, NC – The Brunswick County Town of Navassa will begin accepting bids today to build its community center.
Navassa has been trying to scrape together enough money for the center since the early nineties.
Plans for the center include a medical center, a basketball court, and a library that can be converted to a museum.
Navassa Mayor Eulis Willis says the town's recent rapid growth has increased the urgency of the need for the center.
"We'll be able to sustain. In other words, we'll be able to generate enough business and enough people and enough interest in a project such as the community center for it to be able to sustain itself, without the town necessarily having to use the taxpayers dollars to pay for it."
Willis would not say how much money Navassa has reserved for the new community center, but eight years ago the town received a quarter-million dollars from the federal government for the project.
