Titan Cement Meeting in Hampstead
By Catherine M. Welch
Wilmington, NC – The first public meeting on the Titan Cement plant planned for Castle Hayne takes place Monday night in Hampstead.
The deal has been in the works for nearly three years, and last month, with only one public meeting, New Hanover County commissioners approved $4.2 million in tax incentives to lure the giant cement plant to the region.
Julie Hurley is with the citizens group Stop Titan. She says education is the goal of tonight's meeting.
"I love that the commissioners are concerned about the economic longevity of the whole area, and are considering that. But I think maybe they were so focused on that, that it was at the exclusion of what would this do to not only New Hanover, but Pender and Brunswick county."
Governor Mike Easley's office announced last week a $300,000 North Carolina Fund grant for the proposed Titan plant. In return, Titan Cement promises to invest nearly $500,000 million into a facility and create 160 new jobs.
The meeting has been moved to The Community Building in Hampstead at 14435 Hwy 17.
It starts at 7:00pm
