Wilmington, NC – Drivers on Carolina Beach Road near Greenfield Lake in Wilmington this afternoon made way for a 6-foot alligator.
Police directed traffic as the animal made its slow, steady journey across the intersection of Burnett and Carolina Beach.
Wilmington Police Officer Curt Stansbury says alligators do cross every now and then, and has this advice for anyone who sees the one.
"People just need to stay away from them when they're out. They're more scared of you than you are of them. When they're out crossing the road, just let them be. They'll get back to the water eventually."
Stansbury says usually the alligators use a tunnel under the road to make the journey from Greenfield Lake to the Cape Fear River, but today this one just wanted a little sun.
