State Troopers Brace for Busy New Year's Eve
By Peter Biello
Wilmington, NC – The holiday week wraps up tonight and North Carolina State Troopers are bracing for the busiest night of the year.
As part of the "Booze it and Lose it" campaign, North Carolina State Troopers will install random checkpoints on both state and interstate highways.
Trooper Jorge Brewer says there'll be at least as many troopers watching the roads this year as there were last year.
"It's gonna be one of the busiest nights of the year, so we're going to be out there in force. We'll have just about every available asset patrolling the roads of the state."
Highway officials in South Carolina say they will step up patrols on rural roads, where the number of traffic fatalities is on the rise.
Almost 1100 people have died on South Carolina highways this year.
Spokesperson Kathy Hiles says safety checkpoints will also screen drivers.
"Unfortunately we're ending the year on a poor note," she says. "We did have a triple fatality this morning in the upstate. We're hoping that our efforts this evening will curtail the number of collisions as well as the number of subjects under the influence on the roadways."
