Region Suffering Rash of House Fires

Wilmington, NC – Two morning house fires in Wilmington have added to the region's recent rash of domestic fires.
Fire officials say house fires tend to spike in winter months, when portable heating equipment can set off combustible materials. That's exactly the source being blamed for a mobile home fire in Brunswick County over the weekend that killed two boys.
But Wilmington fire captain Chris Elrod says the unseasonably warm weather means more recent blazes are harder to explain.
"It's just, we're having a bad run right now, is all I can say. I can't really attribute it to any one thing I can put my finger. They're just coming in clusters."
New Hanover County's fire marshal and members of local fire departments were in Raleigh today to lobby for sprinklers in large homes. However the Building Code Council voted the measure down, seven to six.
