N.C. Coastal Federation Wins Grant

By Peter Biello

Wilmington, NC – The North Carolina Coastal Federation has received a grant to make the Brunswick County Government Complex more environmentally friendly.

The Coastal Federation says it has received $40,000 from the State Attorney General's Environmental Enhancement Grant Program. The program was established to preserve and restore North Carolina's natural resources.

Coastkeeper Mike Giles says the money will help keep polluted storm water at the Brunswick County Government Complex from finding its way to local wetlands.

What we'll do is use low impact development technology where we infiltrate that water into the ground where it is cleansed and filtered, so that if it reaches any coastal waters, it's clean.

Giles says the project is an extension of the Lockwood Folly Watershed Roundtable, which highlighted improving storm water control and existing facilities.

He says the Coastal Federation has not decided when to begin the project and does not know how long it will take.
