Lockwood Folly River's Future on the Table

By Megan V. Williams

Brunswick County, NC – Brunswick County is worried explosive growth is eroding water quality in Lockwood Folly River, endangering fish stocks and closing large areas to shellfishing.

Now a county-appointed roundtable is soliciting public comment on its newly-released proposals for managing stormwater runoff in the watershed.

Assistant County Manager Steve Stone says the roundtable's work is getting a positive response from developers.

"We aren't really proposing new regulations per se. It's more about talking about alternative ways to look at things and maybe looking at more collaborative relationships between the county and to some extend the state and the development community and our residents."

Among the proposals are new strategies for riverbank stabilization, greater coordination between state, local, and federal regulators, and encouraging low-impact development.
