Hard-Boiled Novelist Mickey Spillane Dies

Murrells Inlet, SC – Best known as the creator of hard-boiled detective Mike hammer, Spillane authored more than two-dozen books. He moved to the South Carolina coast in the 1950s, after falling in love with the landscape from an airplane.
Larry Schliessmann, owner of the Noir and More bookstore in Murrells Inlet, says Spillane was a familiar, and friendly, figure around the town, taking an active role in civic events and daily life.
Schliessmann first became a fan of Spillane's books as a child, but admits he was almost afraid to meet the author, even as an adult, "because I thought he was Mike Hammer. I didn't realize there was a difference. But there's a huge difference."
Spillane died at his home Monday. He was 88 years old.
