Landscapes offer an unending opportunity to show beauty and bareness, unyielding heat and bitter cold, the joy of a field of flowers and the loneliness of an empty street. A simple landscape can evoke all kinds of emotions for the viewer.
For the artist, the landscape allows us to interpret what we see, not just record it. That allows the artists to expand on what they actually see and distort, change, add and take away pieces of puzzle to add emotion and create a story about what you’re viewing.
This collection of paintings includes timeless vistas of Italy, landscapes with urban intervention, and compositions with imaginary elements such as unexpected color, shapes, forms, and abstracted elements.
About the artists:
Kari Feuer paints in oils with a palette knife. Growing up in the Pacific Northwest and living for decades in New York’s Hudson Valley were both a foundation for her love of nature's beauty and she captures it both abstractly and representationally. She pursues the flow of time and the porosity of shape in her semi-abstract landscapes. Her work has been shown in many galleries in the Northeast, collected on three continents and received national recognition. Having recently moved to coastal North Carolina, she is loving the skies, beaches and marshes as new painting subjects, and is known for her richly-colored and textured expressionistic interpretations. Feeling driven to the edges of the continent where the human imprint is washed away, she feels the constant renewal of the skies as nature's signal of hope. Her abstract work is featured in a recent North Light book, Abstract Painting: A Celebration of Contemporary Art, and won a first in the April 2020 Bold Brush contest.
Always influenced by the arts, Susan Fishbein earned a bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Eastern Michigan University and continued studying painting, drawing, sculpture and other art forms at various venues while living in Los Angeles for over 25 years. Throughout her non-art working career, she always made time to keep studying art and improving her skills. She sees her artistic education as ongoing, learning new painting techniques, using new materials, new points of view, and exploring new concepts with other artists. Fishbein participated in various group shows in and around Los Angeles, and since moving to North Carolina in 2016, she has participated in several shows in the Wilmington/Leland area, as well as a recent private show in Durham NC. Fishbein’s paintings typically focus on emotion and/or a story that is left partially veiled so the viewer can construct the story based on their own life experience. Besides working in traditional oils and acrylics, she also enjoys the freedom and raw emotion of palette knife painting, cold wax, and exploring abstraction.
