Friday Feedback for March 3, 2017

I have been a member since 1988. -- Betty

It’s been an interesting week. One person wrote to accuse me of being a ‘minion of Satan’. A more polite listener, Jeff, wrote: “After a long history of listening to WHQR at work, unfortunately today I changed the radio station. I did this because your programming has been way to anti-trump and liberal recently. It appears that WHQR is trying to make some point about how terrible conservatives are. I have a feeling I'm not the only one switching the dial, however I realize that you will continue to have a strong liberal listener following as long as you continue to program to their agendas. I just thought you might want to know. I sure am going to miss Smooth Landings!”I’ve read some similar comments since the election and, as before, I’ll remind listeners that the beef here is normally with NPR. Of course, we are an NPR station, and proud of it, I might add, but I hope that listeners will base at least part of their reaction to the station on our local programming, not the national. It would be a shame for George to lose a Smooth Landings listener over the network coverage.

Some alert listeners have posted reports to us of signal or streaming problems. We know that the streaming problems don’t usually originate here, though our most recent one did. We also had an issue when last week’s Metropolitan Opera ran past 5 pm, which it does not normally do, and that threw off our automation systems. We’re looking into permanent fixes for all such problems. Thank you for your patience.

We’re making preparations for our Spring campaign, which will begin in less than two weeks. We’re calling this our Take a Day Off drive, because we’re going to do what we can to encourage listeners to pledge early, so we can end early. Hey, everybody benefits! So please, either return your pledge by mail now, or go online and pledge at whqr.org.

And of course, since it’s spring, we’re collecting our Spring Listener Survey. This year there’s an important new wrinkle: instead of forcing you to limit your program choices to 10 items, you can rate every program you listen to on a scale of 1 to 9. I’ll be very curious to see if that changes rankings significantly. You can do this online also.

I’ve been looking through some of the early entries, especially in the Comments section of the form. Here’s a sample:

Listener John wrote:

Smooth Landings- 2 times a week! Bluegrass! Sorry to see Cleve go!

Thanks, John. Anonymous wrote:

I love Frank Stasio [on The State of Things]. I Love this American Life. More blues earlier in the evening. Time to let Click and Clack go.

Listener Nina wrote:

I miss Prairie Home Companion.

Listener Jessica wrote:

I LOATHE Garrison Keillor, don't miss Prairie Home at all. I hate hearing Writer's Almanac, hate Sunday Baroque too -- something about the harpsichord just irks me!

Listener Betty wrote:

I have been a member since 1988, when I relocated to NC and I have continuously enjoyed your programming.

A different Betty wrote:

News programs should not editorialize.

Listener Donna wrote:

I have no radio that will pick up classical HQR-disappointing.

My advice to Donna is to get an HD radio from Amazon of Best Buy. That will fix you right up.
Thanks to everyone for your pledges, and especially for filling out our survey. Again, you can find it at whqr.org.

And by the way, I am not a minion of Satan. Thanks for asking.

We’d love to hear from you on Friday Feedback. You can send an email message to feedback-at-whqr-dot-org, or you can leave a call at 910-292-9477. And as always, thanks for your Feedback.
